Born in Washington, D.C., Richard Gaffney (1935-98) worked at Wagner College on Staten Island for more than three decades as an arts educator and chairman of the Department of Visual Art.  He was also an accomplished artist and worked in many mediums, including printmaking, pen and ink, and watercolor. He was a member of the West Broadway Gallery, a coalition of artists in the SoHo section of Manhattan, and frequently exhibited his work in New York City.
